:- 2.0 out of 5 stars from JoeP. -- Not what I expected : In my opinion, there is too much focus on the many radium based products available in the 20’s and 30’s with no mention of the dangers associated with them until late in the book. I found myself skimming through most of the chapters until the last one. Would not recommend! ( Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Juley Stragand -- Best Book Ever! : The most informative book on Radium history!! Would 100% recommend! ( Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from George Poirier -- History of a Fad : In this book the author recounts the early history of X-rays, radioactivity and radium from the perspective of businesses and the general public – basically the history of the birth, rise and decline of a fad. After briefly discussing the discovery of X-rays, natural radioactivity and the Curies’ discovery of radium and polonium, the author proceeds to cover the subsequent craze that followed in the following years – a craze based on the belief that exposure to radium, and indeed all kinds of sources of ionizing radiation, was extremely beneficial to human health. The types of businesses that arose, their promises and their ultimate demises comprise the main body of the book. The dangers of human exposure to large doses of ionizing radiation are mainly discussed towards the end of the book. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Crazie Betty -- 3.5 - 4 Stars : A history of radium from the time of its discovery all the way through the invention of the atomic bomb. Surprisingly, there are many that still believe in mild radiation therapy to this day, and you can still find products with low level radiation. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from John D. Shaw -- Great history book. : Accurate, easy to read, comprehensive ( Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Tishymonster -- Absolutely fascinating : So let me start by saying, I bought this book and foolishly left it on my coffee table for a few days and then needed to buy another copy as my Dad 'borrowed' it when he visited. He was so drawn in after a few pages he couldn't put it down. Once I started reading it, I realised why. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 30, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Brian Clivaz -- Fascinating read : A really well written first book from a talented author. Fascinating insights on a subject I would not have thought about. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 11, 2020 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Jeff -- Great Book : Well written, easy to read story of a significant part of our scientific and cultural history ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 12, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Oldprof -- A piece of history about the follies of quack medicine and more. : This book provides a fascinating review of a time when radium had supposedly quasi-magical properties, able to cure or alleviate many ailments. It took the atom bomb to deflate the quack medicine that had grown about the element. The true results of exposure to high energy radiation only came became well understood after Hiroshima. The book also provides a timely review of some other quack medicines and their sad, bad effects on a gullible public. Not much changes, does it? ( Reviewed in Canada on December 1, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Great easy-to-understand information : Book arrived quickly and in new condition. Haven't finished it entirely yet but absolutely loving it so far. I had been looking for a book more on the history vs. Science (that may be way over my head) and this one was perfect. A few pages contain some images of old ads...very interesting read:) ( Reviewed in Canada on November 10, 2021 )
